How Stress May Affect Your Smile
Today's fast and hectic pace means that many of us have stress and anxiety levels that are through the roof. Although most of us are aware that stress exacts a toll on our physical health, did you know that it also exacts a toll on your oral health?
We, like you, believe in whole-person health, so we need to understand how stress can adversely affect our oral health. Maintaining good oral health is vital to the beautiful, healthy smile you want and the good mental health that accompanies it.
The following are some of the ways stress can adversely impact your good oral health.
Bruxism
Also known as teeth grinding, bruxism can also manifest as jaw clenching. Since this often occurs during sleep, many people are not aware that they have bruxism. However, if you wake up with any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing bruxism:
- Cracked teeth
- Facial soreness
- Headaches
- Jaw pain
- TMJ disorder
- Worn, eroded tooth enamel
If your jaw, gums, or teeth are sore or sensitive when you wake up, you may have bruxism.
Inflamed Gums
Chronic stress can cause inflammation throughout your body, including your gums. If you have inflamed gums, you're at increased risk for periodontal disease, which may cause:
- Bleeding gums
- Receding gums
- Inflamed gums
- Loosened or lost teeth
These symptoms may all be evidence of gum disease that's caused by stress, so make an appointment with your dentist if needed.
Dry Mouth
Saliva is an essential component of the mouth, but its production can be dramatically reduced by the use of certain medications or certain lifestyle habits, such as mouth breathing. If you have a dry mouth, you're more inclined to have:
- Bacterial growth in your mouth
- Bad breath
- Cavities
Saliva removes food particles, neutralizes acids, and reduces the likelihood of developing decay.
How Can You Improve Your Oral Hygiene?
At some point, everyone gets so stressed that they're tempted to forego their nightly oral hygiene regimen. However, your oral health is integral to your overall well-being, so no matter how tempting it may be, don't neglect it.
To maintain the best oral health, and therefore the best overall health, be sure to:
- Avoid sugary foods and snacks
- Don't succumb to the "just once" temptation
- Brush at least twice daily and floss at least once daily
- Maintain a well-balanced diet
- Keep your body hydrated
- Schedule at least annual dental exams and cleanings; bi-annually is better
- Get a nightguard if you have bruxism
