The Art and Science of a Healthy Smile: Where Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry Meet

At Grapevine Dental, we have one objective: we want to provide our patients with the most beautiful smile while maintaining the best oral health. Fortunately, advances in dentistry have made this possible, often during the same procedure!

Whether you have a chipped tooth or need a whitening procedure, we can help you achieve your objective. Many dental procedures now serve the dual purpose of both cosmetic and restorative dentistry, allowing you to achieve a beautifully white smile while maintaining good oral health. This is called a smile makeover.

Are Cosmetic Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry the Same?

Cosmetic and restorative dentistry are two separate fields of dentistry, but often, both can be achieved during one procedure.

Cosmetic Dentistry:

Cosmetic procedures provide you with whiter, more even teeth that are aesthetically pleasing, but this field isn't concerned with corrective procedures. Examples include bonding, veneers, and whitening procedures.

Restorative Dentistry:

Restorative dentistry focuses on restoring form and function to teeth. It's commonly used in the form of bridges, crowns, fillings, implants, and root canals.

Although these are two separate areas of dentistry, their results often overlap, providing a dual benefit from the same procedure. For example, a crown can strengthen a weak or damaged tooth, but it also restores the aesthetics of the tooth.

If you need restorative dentistry but would also like a more aesthetically pleasing smile, you may be able to get both for the price of the restoration when you have a smile makeover.

How Will a Smile Makeover Help Me?

A smile makeover can help you restore the function and form of your teeth, but it can also beautify your smile. The following are our most common smile makeover procedures:

Dental Crowns

A crown can restore form and function to a damaged or weak tooth, and it will be matched to the color, shape, and shade of the surrounding teeth, providing a cosmetic benefit.

Dental Implants

One or more implants can replace missing or damaged teeth, which will restore form and function to the area. They can also help maintain proper alignment of the surrounding teeth while they eliminate gaps in your teeth. This provides the cosmetic benefit of a complete set of teeth with no gaps or holes.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

We can provide tooth-colored fillings to teeth that have cavities or are damaged. The fillings will match the color of the surrounding teeth, and you won't have the aesthetically displeasing silver amalgam fillings that used to be standard.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers cover minor imperfections such as chips, discoloration, or gaps, but they also protect damaged, sensitive, or weak teeth.

Whitening Procedures

A tooth whitening procedure can provide you with the beautifully white smile you have always wanted. However, we recommend that if you also need restorative dentistry, you complete those procedures first. Then, we can match your restorative dentistry to your desired shade.
