What to Ask Your Dentist at Your Next Appointment

If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, it may be because of dental anxiety, lack of time, or just because your mouth has been feeling fine. But if you’ve decided it’s time to visit your dentist in Grapevine, you may wonder what you should ask to get the most out of your appointment.

Tooth Sensitivity or Pain

Pain or sensitivity in your teeth or gums signals a problem that needs evaluating and possibly treating.

Let your dentist know about pain when biting down, bleeding or swollen gums, or sensitivity to hot or cold foods or drinks. Your dentist will use digital x-rays, intraoral cameras, and other dental technology to identify and treat problems, but any information you can provide will help in diagnosing issues.

Grinding or Clenching

If you wake up with headaches or have a jaw that clicks or pops, let your dentist know. Dentists can detect these problems in your dental exam, but it’s important to discuss any oral issue that bothers you.

Tips for Home Dental Care

Many times, we ignore what’s going on in our mouths until we feel pain. After all, our teeth and gums are fine if we brush and floss our teeth diligently, right?

Unfortunately, our mouths can harbor “silent” problems, too. That’s why you should visit your dentist every six months for an exam and cleaning, but also take advantage of home care tools that work the best.

Ask your dental team which toothpastes, toothbrushes, and dental floss they recommend to address sensitive teeth or gums, tight spaces between teeth, or other issues. They might also recommend a special antibacterial rinse to treat gingivitis.

Your dentist will also check for oral cancer in your dental exam and discuss any treatments you may need, such as dental crowns or tooth fillings.
